In recent years Showman's Engines have played a big part in the Steam Extravaganza. They are for many the pinnacle of steam engine design, with their twisted brass, colourful paintwork and powerful demeanour.
There is something truly magical about watching one of these engine at work in the Fairground, generating the power for the rides. It really is a living machine and a awe inspiring sight to behold.
We always attempt to get 'something different' for you to look at and have in the past had engines visit us from the depths of Cornwall and from as far east as Cambridgeshire. 2011 saw the rare appearance of 'Rajah' which travelled up from South Devon to be with us, a treat for all enthusiasts as it rarely crosses the border north of Devon.
We also showcase the Showman's Engines in our various arenas alongside other Fairground Transport, and we are not adverse to putting a load on the back of them and really demonstrating the diversity of these glorious machines.
Technically of course the Showman's Engine is another variety of Road Locomotive (Link) and examples were constructed by all the big manufactures. On the Showground we usually feature Burrells, Fowlers and Fosters of varied sizes as well as the smaller Showman's Tractors which are equally at home in our parades, in our Fairground and in the display area for you to sit, admire and soak up the incredible atmosphere.
