FRI 6th, SAT 7th & SUN 8th AUGUST 2010 COTSWOLD AIRPORT : KEMBLE : GL7 6BQ

( FORMALLY KNOWN AS KEMBLE AIRFIELD )

 : STATIONARY ENGINES :

Welcome to the Stationary Engine Section. My name is Roy Atkinson and I have been a member of this club and an exhibitor of Stationary Engines for 30 years. I run the Section and look forward to meeting many of you at our Rally at Kemble Airfield.

Why Stationary Engines? A good question - they don't move around and need other transport to get them to shows but without them much of Industry, Agriculture and Commerce would find it hard to function. Just have a look around the Rally and see the number of generating sets, lighting towers etc you see and you realise how important they are.

To the enthusiast the stationary engine can take up much of their life with winter months being spent maintaining and fettling their pride and joy ready for the display season to follow. Tracking down parts and even having new ones made is all part of the fun.

Here at our Kemble Rally we have enthusiasts who come from all corners of the country. In recent years we have had representatives from Derbyshire, Wales, Cornwall and even Scotland as well as more local areas such as Dorset, Wiltshire, Oxford, Devon and of course Gloucestershire.

The range of engines is vast, from small single cylinder two strokes to huge multi-cylinder diesels which have to be mounted on the back of a lorry, many of which are driving a vast variety of equipment. We have a Lister 'A' running a Bamford Corn Mill, another Lister DDK operating an Industrial Sewing Machine, an Earnshaws Open Crank Hot Tube Gas Engine and even a Petter AA1 Generating Set helping Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends do their work. Just four examples of the variety of engines we are proud to show off for you.

This year we hope to display 125 working engines in the space available to us and I do try to ensure that everyone who wants to display their engine can do so as long as valid entry forms and insurance details are received before the cut-off date of 1st June.

I look forward to welcoming old friends back again this year and making a few new ones along the way. See you at Kemble 2010.
