If you look at the mighty Wikipedia (Link) , by definition a ‘Stationary Engine’ is an engine whose framework does not move. Now as you would expect, here at South Cerney we have a different take on that one. Yes they are static as in they are not self propelled, but all are assembled from all around the region – so if you believe the ‘do not move’ bit or not is entirely at your own discretion.
Unlike the opening paragraph to this particular page the actual content found on the showground when it comes to this section is simply fascinating. Many different makers, from many different regions of the word combine to provide a display of highly prized and perfectly preserved engines, both large and small second to none.
Here at the Gloucestershire Steam Extravaganza, our section leader Roy Atkinson takes great pride in not only gathering such a large and varied selection but also combines them all with as much activity and working demonstrations as is possible. Usages for these iconic machines are far to varied to list in this brief introduction, so the best thing to do is to simply drift up and down the engine line and take in the sights, sounds and smells of these wonderful little ‘hit and miss’ machines for yourself.
