SOUTH CERNEY AIRFIELD : CIRENCESTER

To help celebrate the 38thAnnual Gloucestershire Steam & Vintage Extravaganza in its second year at our new site at South Cerney (Nr Cirencester) we intend to try and re-create the look and feel of a wartime Fighter Command Airfield on part of the site that we occupy. This is particularly fitting as South Cerney Airfield (now renamed the Duke of Gloucester Barracks) was a genuine wartime airfield and still retains many of its wartime buildings including Messes, Hangers and the Control Tower which will give an authentic backdrop to the display.

Whilst it is intended to be as accurate as possible the intention is to give a flavour of the sort of things which would be seen on a typical airfield of the period but not to be specific about a particular point in time so that our visitors will experience a range of vehicles, aircraft, artefacts and people that would be seen on such a base.

We have already booked replica aircraft to form the backbone of the display and being accurate replicas visitors will be able to sit in and experience what ir was like to fly these aircraft which would not be possible with originals due to their value and historic importance. Currently we have a Spitfire, Hurricane and Me109 with others possibly in the pipeline. However, it is not all about just the aircraft. We have been promised a number of RAF vehicles of the period as well as the possibility of Anti-Aircraft weapons and specialist plant that would be seen on an airfield as well as civilian items such as pilots' personal cars and motorcycles. But for any display to be complete there needs to be people, and discussions are underway with various re-enactors to provide the necessary human element.

Although much is lined up and even more is promised, we could still do with more exhibits to make this a truly memorable display for both exhibitors and visitors alike and so if you have an exhibit (whatever the size or type) or are a re-enactor which you feel would be suitable for display in this manner and would add to the visitor experience please get in touch and talk it over with us.
